Welcome to the
Brain Image Analysis Unit

The Brain Image Analysis Unit (BIAU) is based in the Centre for Neuroimaging Sciences at the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP) in London, U. K.

The BIAU was founded in 1996 by Professor M Brammer and Professor E Bullmore (now at the University of Cambridge).

It has two main aims. The first is to develop high quality software for the analysis of structural and functional MR data and the second is to support the application of this software to the investigation of psychiatric disorders. Over the past ten years, we have focused mainly on the application of non parametric (permutation-based) inferential procedures to MR analysis. In recent years, we have also had growing interests in the application of multidimensional wavelet analysis to MR data and in the development of real-time fMRI analysis methodology running on Windows-based environments and portable PC systems.

Over the last ten years, we have developed a number of cross-platform software suites for automated MR analysis at single subject and group level. These have been used in a large number of psychiatric and neurological investigations and we are committed to the continued improvement of these software tools in a practical clinical setting.

The BIAU also has a major interest in developing temporo-spatial clustering methods for the analysis of physiologically important brain responses where of response onset and duration is absent or incomplete.

Finally, since 2005, the BIAU has also become involved in the application of machine learning methods to the analysis and classification of brain images. As the unit has a major interest in the application of image analysis methods in psychiatry, one if its aims is to explore the potential of machine learning methods to detect useful biomarkers of mental illness to facilitate early intervention and treatment.
